• Recoverable information from deleted files and data may be stored in unallocated or slack space on a computer hard drive.^[1]

• A file with disk space that has been designated as available for reuse. Although a user may "erase" or "delete" a file, all that is really erased is a reference to that file in a table on the hard disk. Unless overwritten with new data, a "deleted" file can be as intact on the disk as any "active" file you would see in a directory listing.^{[2] [3] [4]}

• A file with disk space that has been designated as available for reuse. The deleted file remains intact until it has been overwritten with a new file.^[5]

• A deleted file which is on disk space that has been designated as available for reuse. The deleted file remains present until it has been overwritten with a new file.^[6]
