Modulator-demodulator
- A device that modulates digital signals to allow their transmission over analog communication facilities. Typically used to allow two computers to communicate over phone lines.[1]
- A device which can take digital data from a computer, translate it into analog signals (tones) and transmit the information over telephones lines. Another modem at the receiving computer will receive the information, translate it back from analog to digital and store it. Typical speeds are from 1,200 to 14,400 bits per second. Some modems also correct any errors which occur in the transmission process.[2]
- A piece of hardware that lets a computer talk to another computer over a phone line.[3]
