EDRM Update – April 2014

EDRM Update\r\n

Welcome to the April 2014 issue of EDRM Update!

\r\nIssue 8 – April 2014\r\n\r\nApril was an exciting month for EDRM. We published a new whitepaper authored by leaders of EDRM’s IGRM team in collaboration with the CGOC titled, “Disposing of Digital Debris – Information Governance Strategy and Practice in Action.” The paper discusses strategy and practice required for a successful information governance program, and is available for download from the EDRM website.\r\n\r\nOur tenth annual spring kick-off meeting was held April 23-24 in St. Paul and was a great success. Members were treated to some of the only nice weather we enjoyed the entire month in Minnesota. But more notably, important topics were discussed related to the future of EDRM and project teams. Read below to learn about the progress we are making.\r\n\r\nRegards,\r\n\r\nGeorge Socha & Tom Gelbmann\r\n\r\nTo receive the newsletter, subscribe to our list\r\n\r\n\r\n

April 2014 Highlights

\r\nOn April 23, the IGRM group published a white paper, “Disposing of Digital Debris – Information Governance Strategy and Practice in Action.” The paper, authored by leaders of EDRM’s IGRM (Information Governance Reference Model) team in collaboration with the Compliance, Governance and Oversight Council (CGOC), is available for at the EDRM website.\r\n\r\nOn April 23 and 24, EDRM held its 10th annual kickoff meeting. Members met as a committee of the whole to review progress since the mid-year meeting last October and to set the direction for current and new initiatives. Project teams then used the time together to work on achieving or revising the goals of each of the projects. Key updates attained or on track for completion include:\r\n

In the EDRM Pipeline

\r\nEDRM plans continued for transition from the current structure as an LLC to a non-profit 501 (c)(6) industry association, guided by a provisional board. The goal is to complete the transition by the end of 2014.\r\n\r\nEDRM’s Data Set team began work on a case study in which the EDRM Privacy & Risk Reduction Model (PSRRM) was used by a large corporation to develop work flow to identify PII during an archives migration effort.\r\n\r\nEDRM’s Data Set team also began work on a micro-dataset project with the goal of developing a number of small data sets containing a variety of file formats for testing and validation purposes.\r\n\r\nEDRM’s Metrics team will pursue additional budget calculators, and develop a metrics maturity model aimed at providing benchmarking guidelines.\r\n\r\nEDRM’s Native Files team will continue refinement of the Encapsulated Native File (.ENF) schema and develop guidelines for redaction of native files. The team will also focus on finalizing the EDRM XML 2.0 schema.\r\n\r\nEDRM’s IGRM team will develop stakeholder viewpoint whitepapers to highlight expectations and obligations of parties involved in developing information governance policies and procedures.\r\n\r\nAdditional teams are forming to address processing standards, email processing and hashing standards, dark data, and challenges of new technologies including guidelines on social media and cloud-based systems.\r\n\r\n

Member Profile of the Monthdominic-brown

\r\nDominic Brown, VP, HP Autonomy\r\n\r\nEDRM Member since 2010\r\n\r\nEDRM Projects & Committees: I lead the EDRM Search Group\r\n\r\nWhy I’m an EDRM member: I belong to EDRM because it provides a great opportunity to work with industry experts that are also hands-on eDiscovery practitioners. In the EDRM Search group for example, we create work products—new models, white papers, and glossaries—based on the technical, legal, and process experience gleaned from actual eDiscovery and Information Governance engagements. The ability to collaborate this way in a noncompetitive environment is extremely educational and also gives me an extensive perspective on the eDiscovery industry as a whole.\r\n\r\n
