EDRM Update

Issue 16 – December 2014

Welcome to the December 2014 issue of EDRM Update!

\r\nWelcome to the year-end issue of EDRM Update and best wishes for a happy, healthy and prosperous 2015!\r\n\r\nEDRM’s 10th year was perhaps its best, as we welcomed 40 new organizational members and 25 new individual members.

Many creative and energetic members helped create useful content and materials to further EDRM’s mission of delivering practical resources to improve e-discovery and infomation governance. Thank you to everyone who worked hard on the EDRM projects throughout the year.

Please take a look at the year’s highlights below.

Regards,

2014 Highlights

It has been a busy year at EDRM.  Here are a few of the highlights, focusing on accomplishments acheived rather than work in progress:\r\n\r\nJanuary: We updated the EDRM Collections Standards on January 16 in response to feedback posted at EDRM.net.

February: The Data Set group updated the diagram for the EDRM Privacy & Security Risk Reduction Model. Click here for more information.

March: EDRM and the University of Florida Levin College of Law held our second annual e-discovery conference, Electronic Discovery for the Small and Medium Case.

April: The IGRM group published a white paper, “Disposing of Digital Debris – Information Governance Strategy and Practice in Action.” The paper, authored by leaders of EDRM’s IGRM (Information Governance Reference Model) team in collaboration with the Compliance, Governance and Oversight Council (CGOC), is available for at the EDRM website.

Also in April, EDRM held its 10th annual kickoff meeting. Members met as a committee of the whole to review progress since the mid-year meeting last October and to set the direction for current and new initiatives. Project teams then used the time together to work on achieving or revising the goals of each of the projects.

May: EDRM published version 3 of the EDRM diagram, updated to emphasize information governance.  Click here to download JPG, EPS and PDF copies of the updated diagram.

June: The EDRM Search team released the EDRM Search Intent Framework. The term “search” is used interchangeably in records management, archiving, and e-discovery, but not all searches are similar as some have more legal impact than others. The new framework was developed to define and document various types of Search search intent that are part of the EDRM.

September: As the first of a series of anticipated its maturity model tools and resources, EDRM’s Metrics group released the new eDiscovery Maturity Self-Assessment Test (eMSAT-1). eMSAT-1 is the first self-assessment resource to help organizations measure their e-discovery maturity with the overriding goal of improving processes. eMSAT-1 is available for download at www.edrm.net/resources/emsat1.

Also in September, EDRM announced a new fee structure for corporations, government entities, and academic institutions. As a result of the change we’ve already seen a significant increase in membership and look forward to the trend continuing.

October: EDRM held its 2014 Fall Workshop. Members met as a committee of the whole to review progress since the April kickoff meeting and to set the direction for current and new initiatives. Project teams used time together to work on achieving or revising the goals of their projects.

December: EDRM’s Search group published Release 2 of Statistical Sampling Applied to Electronic Discovery.

EDRM had been working to form a non-profit organization that could serve as a successor to the current EDRM, ensuring EDRM’s long-term sustainability. Unfortunately, those efforts have not been successful and so we have made the difficult decision to halt that initiative. Our objective remains the same and we will consider other options to address EDRM succession planning in the coming year. In the meantime, rest assured that EDRM will continue to operate as it has the past ten years, focused on its mission to create practical resources that improve e-discovery and information governance.
