• Java is a computer programming language that is designed for use in the multiple-computer environment of the internet. It can be used to make single-machine applications or be distributed among many computers on a network. In addition, Java can be used to create applets for use within a Web page, which allows users to interact directly with the page. Because Java requires no operating system specific extensions, Java applets run on most operating systems. Java is not the same as JavaScript, a Netscape creation that is easier to learn than Java, but lacks some of the speed and portability of Java.  1
